Asia’s “most popular” slum
In the heart of the pulsating business metropolis Mumbai, lays Dharavi. It is said to be the biggest slum in Asia, and according to some residents “the most popular one”. Against the stereotypical image of a slum, Dharavi is a vibrant economic hotspot with numerous small and big businesses. Home to more than a million people, Dharavi provides income opportunities through its thriving small scale industries such as bakeries, pottery, leather and textile and a huge recycling industry that processes and recycles about 80 percent of Mumbai’s waste.
